A Home for the Future of Netball

Developed to support a major government funding application, the Tasmanian Netball Centre is envisioned as far more than an indoor sports venue. It is conceived as the long-awaited home of Northern Tasmania’s netball community—an architectural expression of participation, aspiration and belonging, where grassroots competition, elite performance and community life intersect beneath a single roof.

For generations, netball has flourished despite ageing outdoor facilities and limited access to dedicated indoor courts. Existing venues remain costly, unavailable or designed primarily for other sports, constraining participation, competition and growth. This proposal responds directly to that need by creating a purpose-built indoor facility capable of supporting the sport at every level while establishing a new civic destination for the region.

Positioned over the existing show courts, the centre forms the first stage of a flexible masterplan that can evolve alongside participation and future investment. Rather than replacing the existing precinct, the design strengthens it—integrating with the clubhouse to create a connected sporting campus where administration, hospitality, community activities and competition operate seamlessly together.

The architecture is defined by generosity, flexibility and light. Three indoor courts, including a feature show court, sit beneath clear-span roof forms designed to national competition standards. Carefully controlled natural light, retractable seating and adaptable court configurations allow the building to transform effortlessly between community competitions, high-performance training, major tournaments and multi-purpose events. Beyond netball, the facility supports basketball, volleyball, badminton, fitness programs and community activities, ensuring the building remains active throughout the week and economically sustainable over its lifetime.

Supporting spaces—including contemporary player amenities, changerooms, gymnasium facilities, spectator areas, commentary and scoring facilities, storage and welcoming public spaces—create a complete sporting experience. Durable materials, passive environmental strategies, enhanced arrival sequences, expanded parking and staged delivery reinforce the project’s long-term resilience while delivering a welcoming and accessible destination for athletes, officials and visitors alike.

Transparency and visual connection animate the architecture, allowing the energy of sport to become part of the public realm. The building projects confidence and optimism, celebrating women’s sport while establishing a contemporary identity for the precinct and a benchmark for sporting architecture in Tasmania.
