Sen, White Hills (The Cloud)

Location: White Hills | Tasmania

Positioned atop a gentle knoll within agricultural land soon to be cultivated as a vineyard, this residence is conceived as a quiet, site-responsive retreat. Designed to sit low against the landscape, the building adopts an earth-hugging, horizontal form that embraces the contours of the land and defers to the expansive views across the Launceston valley.

Launceston—an increasingly lifestyle-driven city known for its innovation and natural beauty—becomes a key protagonist in the composition. The architecture captures this spirit, with slender, refined lines and a minimalist language that is both restrained and deliberate. Every aspect of the form has been shaped to respond to its context: optimising solar gain, shielding from prevailing winds, and offering framed views in every direction.

The home unfolds around a central living, dining, and kitchen space, encased in wraparound glazing to deliver uninterrupted 180-degree views from north to south. A generous master suite is oriented to the east to welcome the morning light, while secondary spaces maintain strong connections to landscape. This careful spatial arrangement ensures a lived experience that is immersive, grounded, and seasonally responsive.

Materiality plays a quiet, essential role in expressing the design’s intent. A neutral palette and simple, tactile materials evoke a sense of calm and permanence, allowing the home to recede into its environment while providing moments of sensory richness. Inside and out, the architecture supports a slower pace of life—spaces to sit, observe, and connect.

This residence is not only a private sanctuary, but a demonstration of how architecture can engage deeply with its setting—celebrating both the cultivated and the wild, the immediate and the distant. It offers a lush, contemplative living experience in dialogue with Launceston’s evolving identity.
